That is, until we asked for our checks. Interesting decor, nice seating we love booths! Folks here are friendly, though from time to time language can be a problem. Like its sister restaurants, this Tara Thai offers crispy spring rolls, steamed mussels, honey-roasted duck, stir-fried soft-shell crabs and whole crispy fish. According to the receipt his name was Wong and he was on point. Tara Thai becomes a home, the lunch specials are unbeatable in value and taste and the owners are warm and caring. I explained to the manager what had happened.
All the proteins chicken, beef, pork, shrimp were overcooked and dried out except the calamari - although it looked like frozen, it tasted fresh and was cooked perfectly. We tried several new to us anyway entrees in search of a winner. We argued with him, saying that we needed to get back to work because he was visibly perturbed by our request. I knew nothing about the resturant and I love Thai food. The delivery was on time, no problem. Definitely a good option if you want takeout but you're tired of traditional Chinese food.
Front staff are generally always pleasant, and food is typically ready within 20 minutes of putting the order in. The Tom Kha soup with shrimp is a favorite. Don't miss out on the Thai Ice Tea -- refreshing and creamy. I've gone to this restaurant at least fifteen times, but in a way, my review is a little biased as I've only ever ordered the Panang curry with tofu every time I went here. Delivery was fast and the food arrived hot. I know, not super adventurous but the food is consistently tasty and a generous enough serving that we can happily have leftovers for lunch or dinner the next day. Worse, the quality of the food was low.
This place is a big improvemeny over the previous thai restaurant at this location, Sriri Siam iirc, as to the quality of the food, however, the service can be inconsistent. The appetizers here have always been a better choice for us than the main entrees, but it is a little difficult to build an entire meal out of appetizers, and it is another way of settling for less than you really want. I wrote to the owner of the restaurant, and he has yet to reply after two months. Now, I understand that many people feel like the food is very bland, but if they give the curries a try, they will find that they're actually quite good. There are plenty of authentic Thai favorites at Tara Thai Herndon like spicy papaya salad which is julienned green papaya with string beans, tomatoes and peanuts in a spicy lime dressing or pad pik pow which is a choice of meat that comes sautéed with chili paste, fresh chilies, onions, mushrooms and basil. It had large chunks of beef and potato in a bowl of curry sauce with nuts throughout.
We have only eaten in at this location a few times, typically when we're just leisurely shopping at Montrose and not pressed for time, so can't really speak to the in-room experience don't recall having an issue : we almost exclusively call ahead or stop in for takeout. This is one of those restaurants that after we order and eat, we say never again, and this time I mean it, I'm pretty sure. I ordered the buab pad goung, big mistake the shrimp was overcooked and the sauce tasted very bland. I went with 8 friends and our server Nong was rude and never even once did he come to refill even a glass of water. The staff is also lovely, and always willing to accommodate and make recommendations. When Nong finally returned with our checks, he put them on the table and walked away. Usually ordered Fried Rice, Chicken Pad Thai and Whole Rockfish.
He offcourse wanted quick table turnarounds when the entire restaurant was empty. I told him I was too sick to leave the bathroom! This is one of those restaurants that after we order and eat, we say never again, and this time I mean it, I'm pretty sure. He asked why I hadn't gone to the hospital. Won't make the mistake of patronizing them again. The scallop was not fresh hoping I won't regret this later! As soon as I arrived I checked in on Yelp and noticed a 2.
Service is fine and the food quality is also good. Our usual go-to order includes the Pad Thai and Pad See Euw entrees, along with the chicken kebab appetizers. I was too sick to go back until Monday. The hostess asked me for my name 3x even though my husband and I were the only ones at the hostess stand. Lots of better Thai options around in Rockville. We keep trying the restaurants near us, ones we've tried more than a few times before, always hoping they'll be better, be what we're looking for, be what we're hoping for - we are more stubborn than realistic, it seems.

The Pad see ew with pork was a delicious plate of noodles with broccoli. I have tried the Panaeng curry in many restaurants in all the major cities and have not found one that is even close. He was smirking the whole time I spoke with him and acted as if I was lying! I have searched far and wide for a Panaeng curry that rivals Tara Thai's but to no avail. He wouldn't reimburse me for the meal and didn't offer me a gift certificate as a show of good will.
We didn't get our split checks until 12:47, and after we gave our cards, it took 13 minutes to receive the forms to sign. It wasn't the restaurant's fault. We'll pass from now on. . Food tasted like if Ruby Tuesdays had Thai on their menu. Only two came in an order and not really my definition of a shareable appetizer. Unfortunately, this version lacked both flavor and heat, though it was requested at medium.
Just settling doesn't really get it. When we asked to split the bill this annoyed him even more cos it was more work for him he kept us waiting for 20-30 minutes and went on to take new customers, give food, take new orders and even process bill of multiple customers 2 per table. Inside, mock bamboo and crackled glass create private booth-like tables. He instantly seperated the bill and was friendly. Substituted custard pie for a mango dessert not available - pie was so crummy we tossed it out after 1 bite. Our menu consists of authentic Thai cooking, using family recipes that have been handed down for generations.
