I foresee many more Rick Steve tours ahead. The musical presentations in his bar and music shop provided a wonderful opportunity for us to hear outstanding traditional Irish music! We travel alone a lot, but decided to do Ireland first trip there with a tour. The clubhouse is stunning too, built on the ruins of a medieval castle. The other tour members were also a joy to hang out with! The course has attracted many professionals. Not my first visit, won't be my last! That said, Joe was amazing and the places we stopped were clearly given careful thought and outstanding planning.
Old Head Golf Links No. The golf resorts, golf hotels, and castles are world famous and the hospitality of the Irish is legendary. Just the right balance of planned and free time; wonderful local guides who know their home turf well and love to share it; we met and made new friends in our tour group and just had a truly memorable experience overall. This is by far the best tour I have ever been on. I would not describe it as phenomenal with the reasons outlined below.
We chose to hike and enjoyed the 2 hours given to explore. Dara is very knowledgeable and thorough. There you can join your guide for a minibus tour 'round this dramatic island, including the site of its ancient, cliff-hanging Celtic fortress, Dun Aengus. We also appreciated have breakfast available so we didn't have to spend time finding it ourselves even if it meant we didn't visit the local bakeries as much. We appreciated that most days started about 8:30 and an occasional day to sleep a little longer. The golf course sits on a headland of the southern tip of Ireland which was once a fortress.
The Giant's Causeway was incredible in beauty and folk tales. It exceeded my expectations in so many ways. I enjoyed the wide variety of areas the tour covered. From the private session at our Dingle hotel to the concert in town, to the Pubs holding session, all good. Just thinking about it and looking back at pictures gives me chills. She was very informed on all of Ireland and kept us feed with details about local life to lots of history. It was so peaceful and stunning and it absolutely took my breath away.
Felt it really gave me a sense of what Ireland was. Dara gave us great suggestions for our personal time. Easy travel via bus through the countryside, safe feeling with our driver Pamela , navigating the narrow roads. Avoid jet lag No matter how good you sleep on the overnight flight, your body will still feel rotten by the time you land. This golf course also offers bunkers, splendid view of the Irish Sea and streams.
I learned so much about the history, the culture, the music and politics of Ireland which helps in appreciating how Ireland is what it is today. Pascal, our tour guide was the best. The wonderful experiences our tour offered were so varied, interesting, educational and fun!! No it was the cliff fort on Inishmore. Dara did an excellent job of touring us through Ireland. Music played a large role and we truly experienced traditional and popular music as it related to the spirit and culture of Ireland.
There are some who believe God created Ireland, just for golfers. Tonight we'll share dinner together and sleep in Galway 2 nights. You learn so much more about the history, sites, and culture on these tours vs going on your own. Well not really advertising spend anyone! Our first ever Rick Steves tour definitely exceeded our expectations. Dara Herlihy was very informative and fun.
The food was delicious, especially the breakfasts! Two Irish magazines going head to head is very refreshing indeed. Portmarnock, County Dublin 12 Portmarnock Golf Course in Dublin. Great tour, great guide, great bus driver Pam , great everything!!!! The only reason I did not rate it outstanding was the accommodations at two of our locations were sub-par, and two were problematic. The scenery was photo-worthy at every turn. All guides and our bus driver were everything I could have wanted. Membership numbers in clubs are challenging and the appeal of golf in Ireland, indeed as in the rest of the world, continues to decline.
